OPEN* Business Spotlight: Phebe’s Cafe

Mike Colvin Downtown Event

Tell us a bit about yourself and your business. What made you decide to open your own small business?

My name is Lonnie Sholar, and my business is Phebe’s Cafe, located in the lobby of the Fifth Third Center.  Phebe’s is a family business named after my autistic daughter. I opened my own business because it gives me flexibility around my family’s schedule. We serve breakfast & lunch with a full coffee bar.

What do you enjoy about working in downtown Dayton?

I enjoy working in downtown Dayton because of the people, the atmosphere, and I love the hustle and bustle.

Tell us something about your business that may surprise people to learn.

People might be surprised to learn everything we make for breakfast and lunch is fresh, nothing is pre-made. Also, my family is from Cuba and we offer authentic Cuban food. We offer one special and two soups every day.

How is your business coping with the pandemic and how can people support you now?

Our business is hurting like everyone else, but our regulars recognize the struggle and show support for us in many ways.
