On First Friday, June 4th, from 5-10p, Circles Art Studio, located in the Front Street
Studios at 1001 E 2nd St – Studio 2120, will host “There’s Something About Mary: A benefit for Mary Kathryn Burnside.” Over 95 local artists and businesses have donated artwork and gift items to be auctioned online via GalaBid (https://app.galabid.com/maryclash) to raise money to assist with medical expenses for Mary Kathryn Burnside.
The art exhibit and online auction will open during First Friday, June 4th from 5-10p and the auction will end in conjunction with a live event at the gallery on Saturday, June 19th from 5-10p.
Mary has been an active organizer and patron of the arts in Dayton for almost two decades, the creative community wanted to support her in this time of need by creating the event “There’s Something About Mary.” While the title of the fundraiser is a playful nod to the 1998 film, the expression also perfectly encapsulates the deep gratitude the community has for all the artistic opportunities and philanthropic events Mary has arranged for Dayton creatives throughout the years.
In conjunction with her downtown small business, Clash Dayton, Mary has provided costumes for numerous art shows and fundraising events, including SICSA, and for the theme release parties for the main event for Masquerade, a fundraiser for Equitas Health (formerly Aids Resource Center Ohio). Additionally, Mary has organized vintage-inspired fashion shows for local assisted-living and senior care programs and facilities.
Clash Dayton has been a sponsor of numerous PUSH (Professionals United for Sexual Health) fundraisers, and has hosted competitions for artists, photographers and fashion designers held in conjunction with musical or neighborhood-related events. In 2013, Mary organized the first Clash Fashion Show, a biannual runway show featuring local fashion designers and vintage items worn by local models.
While Mary does not lack in drive or creativity, her cancer diagnosis, treatment plan, and the pandemic have created an unforeseen but significant financial hardship for which she could use our help–the community that she has so generously and selflessly nourished, supported, and built.
Mary’s husband, James Hicks, is also a local business owner. Regular customers of both Hicks Barber Shop and Clash Dayton are familiar with the couple’s beautiful little girl, Freya Moon, who arrived to complete their family in 2019.
These successful store-fronts are much-loved by their local community, but like most small businesses trying to survive a pandemic, money is tight, and decisions are made where costs can be minimized. Unfortunately, the decision to drop an expensive health insurance policy came before Mary’s diagnosis of stage two breast cancer in October of 2020.
In addition to “There’s Something About Mary” fundraising event, a GoFundMe was created in February 2021 and is still receiving donations, however, the medical bills are pouring in faster than donations.
All work will be available in auction style online via the GalaBid website, so that people can bid from home or from the live events. https://app.galabid.com/maryclash
