DECEMBER FILMS:
12/1 Room (2015)
In this award-winning film, a kidnapped mother (Brie Larson) and son (Jacob Tremblay) make a daring escape and experience a dramatic homecoming. Based on the best-selling novel, Room is a riveting look at the power of imagination and unstoppable force of a mother’s love. Brie Larson won an Oscar, Golden Globe, Film Independent Spirit Award and BAFTA for this performance.
12/8 Central Park Five (2012)
This Peabody Award-winning film by Ken Burns tells the story of the five black and Latino teenagers who were wrongly convicted of raping a white woman in New York City’s Central Park in 1989. This is the story of the Central Park Jogger case, told for the first time from the perspective of the five teenagers whose lives were upended by a miscarriage of justice.
12/15 The Hours (2002)
Three women in different eras (Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore) are related by a parallel in their personal lives: one is throwing a party for a friend suffering from AIDS; another, in 1949, is suffering as a young wife; the third, Virginia Woolf, is writing “Mrs. Dalloway.” Winner of Best Actress (Nicole Kidman) at the Academy Awards, the BAFTA Awards and the Golden Globes. Winner of a Silver Berlin Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.
12/22 The African Queen (1951)
Starring screen legends Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn, The African Queen tells the timeless tale of two mismatched strangers joining forces in a common cause – and finding love along the way. The story chronicles the burgeoning romance between Bogie’s river rat Charlie Allnut, and Hepburn’s missionary Rose Sayer, as they reluctantly join forces to torpedo a German gunboat in war-torn East Africa. Humphrey Bogart won an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his work in this film.
12/29 The Great Dictator (1940)
In his controversial masterpiece, Charlie Chaplin offers both a cutting caricature of Adolf Hitler and a sly tweaking of his own comic persona. Chaplin, in his first pure talkie, brings his sublime physicality to two roles: the cruel yet clownish “Tomainian” dictator and the kindly Jewish barber who is mistaken for him. Featuring Jack Oakie and Paulette Goddard in stellar supporting roles. The Great Dictator is an audacious amalgam of politics and slapstick, culminating in Chaplin’s famously impassioned speech. Nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role, and Best Writing.
