It’s the family-friendly celebration of the season! Dayton Metro Library hosts Party in the Park on Saturday, June 29, 1:00-4:00 p.m. Games, entertainment, activities, and experiences for all ages take place inside the Main Library and in Cooper Park, downtown. Admission and all activities are free; food trucks will be on hand for the purchase of food and beverages. The event takes place rain or shine.
Party in the Park takes place at the halfway point in the Summer Challenge, DML’s annual summer reading and learning program. Each year, thousands of area children, from babies through teenagers, participate in the Challenge, keeping track of the time they spend reading and doing activities. They earn incentives and chances at the Grand Prizes along the way.
“There’s still plenty of time for kids to register and participate in the Summer Challenge, and there will be registration opportunities at the Party,” said Diane Farrell, Director of External Relations and Development. “But whether they are participating or not, families will have a wonderful time together at our event.”
Featured at the Party in the Park is the premier of a brand new, original musical production called “Felix & Fiona’s Musical Adventure.” The production is a joint venture among the Dayton Metro Library, Muse Machine, Sinclair Community College, and composer Austin Jacquith. It is one aspect of a multi-faceted project that supports the Third Grade Reading Guarantee. Other key elements are an original chapter book, an audiobook, and downloadable music.
Two performances are scheduled during Party in the Park at 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. in the Main Library’s Eichelberger Forum.
“We’re beyond excited to premier the Felix & Fiona musical at Party in the Park,” said Farrell. “The book, music, and theatrical performance allow kids to enjoy the experience in a variety of different ways. It’s been a labor of love for all of the organizations who are involved in supporting third grade reading proficiency in our area.”
The production will tour several Dayton Metro Branch Libraries in July and August. Ultimately DML will give the production and accompanying curriculum to Muse Machine for future use.
In addition to the musical, Cooper Park and the Main Library will be filled to capacity during Party in the Park with fun activities, attractions and activities for babies and toddlers, families, teens, and adults.
The Human Race Theatre Company wraps up their Summer Stock Kids Camp with a free performance of RIPPLES, an original play about bravery, imagination and space travel, written and directed by Jake Lockwood. This performance takes place at 1:00 p.m. in the Eichelberger Forum.
