On Saturday, October 26, the Eichelberger Forum at the Main Library in Dayton will be filled with the unmistakable sounds of African drumming. Sogbety Diomande, drummer and performer from the Ivory Coast, leads a free drumming workshop at 1:30-2:30 p.m., followed by a public performance from 3:00-4:00 p.m. at the Dayton Metro Library, 215 E. Third Street.
During the workshop, Diomande teaches adults and families basic techniques of hand drumming, focused on drumming styles of the Ivory Coast. He’ll demonstrate the basic sounds of the African djembe, a goblet-shaped drum popular in West Africa. His performance, which follows at 3:00 p.m., features drumming and dance, colorful costumes, musical instruments, rhythms, and songs for audiences of all ages.
“I can’t imagine anyone participating in a Sogbety Diomande workshop and not being happy and full of life,” says Donna S. Collins, Executive Director of the Ohio Alliance for Arts Education.
Sogbety Diomande was born in the village of Toufinga, a small farming community in the Northwest region of the Ivory Coast. Since moving to the United States in 1997, he has performed with a number of dance companies including the Mask Dance Company, the Kotchenga Dance Company, and Guinean dance and drum company Tokounou. He was featured as lead djembe drummer on Jimmy Buffett’s tour in 2000, and was a resident artist at Disney World’s Harambe African Village. More recently, Diomande has been teaching drumming in his adopted home of Ohio.
