Artists invited to share designs for next round of ArtWraps project

Mike Colvin DDP Press Releases

Applications from all ages will be accepted through Friday, June 30.

June 7, 2023 (DAYTON, Ohio) – Artists of all ages are invited to submit their designs to be considered for the next phase of the ArtWraps project. The Downtown Dayton Partnership (DDP) is partnering with The Contemporary Dayton and the City of Dayton for the second round of the successful campaign. In the inaugural round of the project in 2022, 15 downtown utility boxes were covered with ArtWraps designs. The ArtWraps project aims to turn ordinary objects, like utility boxes, into vibrant displays of art throughout the downtown community.

“The first set of ArtWraps have been incredibly popular with downtown businesses, residents, and visitors alike,” said Sandra K. Gudorf, president of the Downtown Dayton Partnership. “These pieces of artwork found in unexpected places have really helped to showcase the vibrancy of downtown and the people who make it great. We’re excited to bring even more art to the streets of downtown.”

Up to 15 of the submitted artist designs will be selected to “wrap” silver utility boxes throughout downtown. Each design will be printed on vinyl and installed by downtown business, Digital Fringe. Artists should submit designs that would bring positivity, creativity, and vibrancy to downtown. Designs reflecting Dayton’s community pride, history, and culture are encouraged but not required. Submissions must not contain any advertisements, logos, or artist names.

“We received a tremendous response to the first round of ArtWraps,” said Eva Buttacavoli, executive director of The Contemporary Dayton. “We are excited to see more of Dayton’s creative minds share their work to beautify downtown.”

Artists of selected designs will receive $500 each and be recognized at the site of their work and in print and digital marketing materials. Designs may be hand-drawn or digitally rendered but must be submitted via email. All ages are welcome to apply; artists younger than 18 must have a guardian sign their application. Those who submitted to the first round of ArtWraps are eligible to apply again, either with their previously submitted design or a new creation. Any Ohio resident within a 50-mile radius of downtown Dayton is eligible to submit designs. Utility boxes will vary in size and selected designs may be modified or adjusted to fix properly.

Applications may be submitted via email until 11:59 p.m. on Friday, June 30. Winners will be announced and notified during the week of July 14, 2023. The ArtWraps will be printed and installed by Digital Fringe. For more contest information and guidelines visit The Co’s call for entries.

ArtWraps is a subdivision of DDP’s Urban Art Intersections sponsored by PNC Bank.

All questions about ArtWraps should be presented to DDP’s Director of Projects, Laura Woeste, at woeste@downtowndayton.org, or 937-224-1518 ext.229.
