Downtown is a HotZone
Enjoy free Wi-Fi access in Your Downtown
Back in 2005, Dayton became one of the first cities to offer free wireless Internet service. So what, you ask? So instead of spending all your time chained to a desk, you can have a fabulously productive day sitting at Courthouse Square, RiverScape MetroPark, Cooper Park, or almost any outdoor spot in downtown Dayton.
Downtown Dayton’s Wi-Fi hot zone extends to the river to the North, Keowee St. to the East, Fifth St. to the South, and I-75 to the West. The service does not penetrate deep into buildings (i.e. past the windows) unless a device is purchased (for about $150) and set in the window to capture the signal and rebroadcast it. The radios are at street light height and use linear technology, so the higher you are in a building the less likely it is that you will receive a good signal. The hardware for the system is in the process of being rebuilt, so look for future improvements!
Getting Connected...
- You will need a computer, pocket PC or other device with a wireless networking card and any Web browser. Many modern devices are Wi-Fi capable.
- When you're in range, your wireless device will detect the system. Choose "harborlink" and accept the connection.
- Launch your Web browser and accept the terms of use on the login page.
- The Dayton FreeSpot page, with user links and sponsor ads, will appear every 12 minutes if you are surfing.
- If you have access to a virtual private network (VPN) to encrypt your transmissions, log on to the Dayton access point before launching your VPN software.
But Don't Forget...
- The system is public and free, but not secure. If your email isn't encrypted, be careful about what information you're sending. Do not enter credit cards or other personal account information on Web sites.
- Be sure to update your spyware and antivirus software to avoid nasty surprises.
