Infrastructure Replacements and Enhancements
Your Downtown will have new streets by the end of 2010
Downtown’s streets are about to get a facelift. Click here to see the list of projects. Or view this map of the proposed changes (3 MB).
Traffic lanes will be reduced during these repairs, but there will be at least one lane open on these streets during the work whenever possible. Additionally, resurfacing or repaving is a shorter process and will create less disruption.
Gateway Project
Work on the latest downtown infrastructure enhancement project is slated to begin in June, 2010, and be completed by November. The "Gateway Project" will bring street resurfacing and sidewalk, curb and driveway repairs to much of the Central Business District. The $3.0 million project's most visible elements will be three new landscaped "gateways" at key downtown entry points. The first gateway is under construction on West First Street, between I-75 and Perry Street. Additional gateways will be constructed on East and West Third Streets.
Tentatively, work will begin on the East Third Street Gateway (between Keowee and Webster Streets) by late July and on the West Third Street Gateway (between I-75 and Perry Street) by late August. Sidewalk and curb repair will begin in June and continue through the summer; street resurfacing is scheduled for September and October.
Vehicular traffic will be temporarily interrupted by the construction, with occasional lane closures, and pedestrians will be diverted around active construction areas. Access to businesses and parking lots will be maintained, and businesses and residential properties in affected areas are being notified of work plans.
“The Gateway Project will complement recent and future infrastructure improvements in Dayton,” Mayor Gary Leitzell said. “The City of Dayton is investing significantly in the community’s future and creating a more business-friendly and visitor-friendly environment in the Central Business District.”
The Gateway Project is funded by federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Stimulus) grants channeled through the state of Ohio and the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission. The work is being performed by Barrett Paving/SK Construction.

I-75 Phase II Improvements
Beginning in 2013, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) will start construction on the second phase of planned I-75 improvements. Construction is expected to last three years. Phase II impacts the section of I-75 that runs from Fifth Street to Riverview Avenue through downtown. Phase II will give travelers through downtown three lanes of through-traffic and a single, centrally-located interchange with access to Monument Ave., First St., Second St., Third St. and Salem Ave. This concept is designed to coincide with the two-way street conversions, making entrances and exits much simpler for drivers. Main Street Reconstruction Complete!
The Main Street reconstruction project began on May 18, 2009, with work starting at Sixth Street and continuing north to Monument Avenue. Originally slated for completion in December 2009, the project finished nearly two months ahead of schedule. Main Street reopened to traffic on October 21 following a noon processional and ribbon cutting ceremony.
This project consisted of the reconstruction of Main Street, including the replacement of brick crosswalks, between Monument Avenue and Sixth Street.
