The Third Perk Coffee House and Wine Bar, located at 46 W 5th Street in downtown Dayton, is hosting an art exhibit entitled Historic African American Churches of Southwest Ohio produced by The African American Visual Artists Guild. Members of AAVAG will be present to meet and greet the public from 2 to 6 pm during the Amazing Race on Saturday, June 1st.
The churches celebrated in the exhibit were chosen for their 75-plus years in existence ministering to their congregations, serving the communities in which they reside, and being civil rights advocates in their cities. The churches included are: Bethel Missionary Baptist, Bethesda Temple, First Wesleyan Methodist, Greater Allen AME, McKinley United Methodist, Mt Calvary Baptist, Mt Enon Missionary Baptist, Mt Pisgah, Phillips Temple, St Margaret’s Episcopal, Tabernacle Missionary Baptist, Trinity Presbyterian USA, Wayman Chapel AME, and Zion Baptist – all of Dayton, Ohio; Central Chapel AME of Yellow Springs; Holy Trinity AME of Wilberforce; Middle Run Baptist, and Zion Baptist of Xenia; Trinity AME of Springfield; Bethel AME of Middletown; Allen Temple AME, Carmel Presbyterian, New Prospect Baptist, St Andrews Episcopal, Union Baptist, and Zion Baptist – all of Cincinnati.
The artists contributing their talents to this exhibit are: Andrea Walker Cummings, Yvette Walker Dalton, Dwayne M Daniel, Clifford Darrett, Willis Bing Davis, Deborah Dixon, Horace Dozier, Lois Fortson-Kirk, Morris T Howard, Bennie Kelley, Clarice Moore, Simeon Oyeyimi, Debra Richardson-Wood, Craig Screven, and Erin Smith-Glen.
A 24-month calendar depicting each of the churches along with an artist’s statement about themselves and the church is available for a $20 donation. It can be purchased at the venue or via the website at www.aavag.org. Proceeds from the calendar donations go to support young developing artists along with this and future projects of its kind.
In addition to June 1st, the exhibit can also be seen at Third Perk until June 13th during its normal business hours as follows: Mon & Tues 7:30AM to 5PM, Wed & Thurs 7:30AM to 7PM, Fri 7:30AM to 8PM, and Saturday 9AM to 5PM.
